Poor Things

When: Friday 6th June 2025

Hosted by: WMIP Analytic Film Group

We meet regularly online (once every couple of months) and bring analytic thinking to discussions on a range of films. Group members suggest film and at the end of each session we draw the title for our next session. Films are introduced by the proposer who invites the group members into an exploration from a psychological perspective

This film is available to watch on Disney + with subscription, Amazon Prime Video £4.99, Sky Store £3.99, Apple TV £4.49 Microsoft Store £3.49, You Tube £3.49

Starring: Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, Ramy Youssef, Christopher Abbott, Jerrod Carmichael and Margaret Qualley. Based on the 1992 novel by Alisdair Gray, written by Tony McNamara, and directed by Yorgos Lanthimos.

Poor Things: PLOT

The film follows the experiences of Bella Baxter, a young woman in Victorian London who has been brought back to life by the deranged surgeon Godwin Baxter via brain transplant. As she rapidly develops and ‘plots her course to freedom’ he enlists the research skills of fellow medical student Max McCandles to document the strange behaviours of the Frankenstein like creation that is Bella Baxter.

Applauded for its sumptuous sets and wildly imaginative costumes this is an absurdist’s vision of the wild science and propriety of the Victorian period which led to the creation of so many of the ‘monsters’ of literary history. Dividing audiences the film has won both awards and criticisms. Amongst other comments it has been described as: “a virtuoso comic epic” in which Stone gave a “hilarious, beyond-next-level performance”- Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian and “a 141- minute mistake”- Mick LaSalle at the San Francisco Chronicle

Scott Mantz described the film as “a seriously misguided take on female empowerment”, though praised the ambition and production values.
