The red-light district of the hysterical mind: Shame, Doubt and Sexuality

WHO DESIRES WHAT, AND WHY DO THEY WANT IT?

This landmark play by Tennessee Williams, – America’s Chekov, won him the Pulitzer Prize. It became, a landmark 1951 movie directed by Elia Kazan. It is one of the best transcriptions from stage to film and is regarded as a cinematic masterpiece. The electrifying depiction of raw sexuality by Brando propelled him to stardom but was regarded by some as shocking. Vivien Leigh’s extraordinary depiction of Blanche’s collapse from prissy, high-minded southern belle into madness is heart-rending. Williams’ play tells us about madness, shame and doubt, attitudes to sexuality, class, and much about the author.

This film is available to watch on Amazon Prime video, but make sure you watch the restored 1993 director’s uncut version.

TENNESSEE WILLIAMS

Playwright, poet, and fiction writer, Tennessee Williams is a towering figure of American theatre. His twenty-five full-length plays depict sexual conflict, repression, loneliness, and impulsive violence. He is widely considered the great playwright of the American South and one of the greatest playwrights in the world.
