Recording available- Ghosts as Gurus: Learning from experience in the Aesthetic Vertex

Speaker: Shalini Masih
Chaired by: Laura Chaisty

Shalini Masih will be presenting her paper titled, ‘Ghosts as Gurus: Learning from Experience in the Aesthetic Vertex’. The paper explores the intersection of psychoanalysis and traditional healing practices, focusing on spirit possession. Drawing from personal experiences and cultural insights, Masih emphasizes the importance of faith, play and love in understanding and addressing a religious phenomena that has been an other to Psychoanalysis. She advocates for an aesthetic approach to symptoms, appreciating their cultural and emotional significance. The work underscores the need for cultural sensitivity, openness, and a holistic perspective in psychoanalytic practice, revealing the transformative potential of such an approach. Masih will reflect on how her research has come to influence her practice and influences the audience who come to her for psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
