Psychoanalytic film discussion : 2001: A Space Odyssey

We meet regularly online (once every couple of months) and bring analytic thinking to discussions on a range of films. Group members suggest film and at the end of each session we draw the title for our next session. Films are introduced by the proposer who invites the group members into an exploration from a psychological perspective

2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY PLOT
Inspired by Arthur C. Clarke’s 1951 short story “The Sentinal” this epic movie is cited as changing the face of film making and though made 50 years ago, it is still regularly voted the best film ever made. Famed for its complex story and big themes Kubrick likened the film to a painting and a piece of music, something to experience “at an inner level of consciousness”.
The film stars Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, William Sylvester and Douglas Rain and follows a voyage by astronauts, scientists, and the sentient supercomputer, HAL to Jupiter to investigate an alien monolith, an imposing black structure connecting the past and future. Whilst on their mysterious mission their ship’s computer system, HAL, begins to display increasingly strange behaviour, leading to a tense showdown between man and machine that results in a mind-bending trek through space and time
With too many themes and interpretations to cite, this is a film that transports the viewer through time and space and challenges the perception of film as narrative story. It has been described as ‘an allegory of human conception, birth and death’. Notoriously enigmatic, like a dream, this film is best received as an experience. We can bring our reflections, wonderings, thoughts and theories to explore together in our discussion group.
