Shame and Psychoanalysis: Better late than never!

When: Saturday 27th April

Speaker: Simon Archer

In his first talk Simon will outline the history of shame as it appears in mythology, drama and literature and its slow emergence within analytic writings.  Simon will then speak about working with shame in the course of analytic therapy, signs of conscious and unconscious shame, defences against shame, and the possibilities that arise when the therapist’s own shame is activated

About Simon Archer

Simon Archer arrived in his psychoanalytic home via a bumpy but adventurous ride from art school. Along the route were: An artist’s studio in London’s docklands; plumbing, decorating and joinery to earn money; a teaching certificate, adult education tutoring, art school teaching; art therapy and finally, before psychoanalytic training, psychiatric social work as a group and individual therapist in a therapeutic community. He trained with the British Association of Psychotherapists (Now part of the BPF). He moved to York in the 1980’s and worked in full[1]time private practice while training with the Institute of Psychoanalysis. He is a fellow of the British Psychoanalytical Society and a founder member of the North of England Association for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (Newcastle). He is retired from clinical practice but continues to teach, supervise, and assist with various psychoanalytic trainings currently including the BTTP and previously WMIP.
